Titans of Theatre Tackle a Classic
The Orange Tree Theatre autumn season opens with Charles Dance (Gustav), Nicholas Farrell (Adolf) and Geraldine James (Tekla) in Howard Brenton’s adaptation of Strindberg’s Creditors, directed by the company’s Artistic Director Tom Littler.
When you’ve been deceived, even just once, you arm yourself.
Adolf, an artist, is hopelessly in love with his new wife Tekla – brilliant, worldly, and enthrallingly unpredictable. But in a quiet seaside hotel, a chance encounter with a persuasive stranger begins to unravel everything he thought he knew. As suspicion takes root and loyalties crumble, revenge is best served cold.

August Strindberg (1849-1912) was a pioneering Swedish dramatist and one of the most influential writers of modern literature. His principal works include Miss Julie, Creditors, A Dream Play, The Dance of Death, The Ghost Sonata and Creditors, a darkly glittering masterpiece; a devastating comic thriller about marriage and manipulation.
Artistic Director Tom Littler said today, “I’m biased, but I can’t think of a better space than the Orange Tree to see great performances and hear great writing up close, and this season redoubles our commitment to exemplary acting and texts. There’s a strong Scandinavian theme, which sees Howard Brenton, Tanika Gupta, and Richard Eyre in conversation with masterpieces by August Strindberg and Henrik Ibsen; we’ll also present a Northern Lights mini-season of Lunchtime Plays. Chinonyerem Odimba reinterprets Lewis Carroll; Richard Brinsley Sheridan gets his 250th birthday present; and Nicholas Wright’s exquisite work is rightly honoured. I can’t wait to see Pearl Chanda, Niamh Cusack, Charles Dance, Lisa Dillon, Nicholas Farrell, Geraldine James, and Will Keen lead a series of remarkable ensembles.”
Orange Tree Theatre from 6 September – 11 October 2025
