NATHAN Jones said he would take any win in the Championship after his side held off strugglers Sheffield Wednesday at The Valley.
Sonny Carey and Reece Burke had the Addicks ahed at half-time before Wednesday reduced the deficit through Jamal Lowe with 20 minutes left.
The hosts protected their lead and the Owls had goalkeeper Ethan Horvath sent-off in added-time as they fell to the bottom of the Championship.
“It was a real hard-fought game,” Jones said on Charlton TV. “I thought we were good in the first half and obviously went 2-0 up and it probably could have been a little bit more with some situations and some opportunities, but we knew that they’d come out fighting.
“They’ve come back twice this season from 2-0 down, so we knew it would be a difficult second half, and we made it that way. Credit to them because they kept fighting, they kept pressing buoyed by an excellent crowd in their end.
“I just would like us to have a little bit more control in the second half, but any win in the Championship is a good win. Especially coming back from the international break where we’ve had four away on international duty, you don’t know how people are, there’s a bit of rustiness and it showed in that second half.”
Carey scored his third in three home games.
“I thought he was excellent,” Jones said. “The energy he shows and the quality for the run, he could have scored off the first one but then the good finish in the second one. He was the threat all game, so I’m delighted for him and delighted we won the game.
James Bree got his third assist of the season when his free-kick was headed in by Burke for his first Charlton goal.
Jones said: “It was just a wonderful ball, you can’t find many better balls than that. Burkey’s scored goals for me before. We mentioned to him on Thursday that he was due one.
“We’re just delighted with the win, and we know we could have been better in the second half and we’re under no illusions with that.”
The Addicks travel to Portman Road to face Ipswich Town on Tuesday.
