Four semi-staged performances

A new British musical by Jane Morgan, over four decades in the making, will finally reach the stage this summer, as Once in a While premieres with a special four-performance run.

Set in 1930s London, Once in a While is a witty, romantic comedy that captures the elegance and charm of the golden age of British theatre – perfect for fans of Ivor Novello, Noel Coward, Julian Slade and Sandy Wilson.

The musical follows singing teacher Bernard Chalmondly and his new student Nancy, who both fall wildly in love. But with Nancy’s formidable aunt determined to intervene – and Bernard’s new show about to open in the West End – true love faces its toughest encore yet.

Forty-three years in the making, Once in a While is the debut musical of Jane Morgan, a 72-year-old musician from London, who began writing it in 1983.

“Like so many ideas, it just happened upon me,” Morgan recalls. “I found myself scribbling lyrics in traffic jams or half-asleep at night. The songs emerged in the romantic, lyrical style of Ivor Novello, and once they arrived, I couldn’t ignore them.”

Now, after 43 years, her musical will be brought to life by a talented cast and creative team in this world-premiere concert performance. For Morgan, it’s “the show that refused to be forgotten.”

The production features a sparkling cast of ten, led by Greg Castiglioni (Phantom of the Opera, Titanic, Woman in White) and Jenny Perry (Phantom of the Opera, Rocky Horror Show), Janet Amsden, Oliver Broad, Elizabeth Chadwick, Chris Gannon,

Stephanie Howlett,, Ian Prosser, Charley Robbie and Alex Ryder. It will be helmed by acclaimed fringe director David Phipps-Davis.

The production runs from 1-2 June for four performances only (daily at 2:00pm and 7:30pm) at the Union Theatre, Southwark.
