What makes a city feel like our own?
For some, a city is home. For others, it is somewhere they once belonged, somewhere they are passing through, or somewhere they may never fully arrive. Rather than seeing the city as a fixed geographical location, Unanchored City invites audiences to consider it as something shaped by lived experience: a shifting landscape where memories accumulate, identities evolve, and meanings are constantly renegotiated.
The exhibition unfolds across five thematic zones: Memory and Absence, Gaze, Liminal Passage, Desire and Language, and Mutation, tracing emotional and psychological experiences rather than geographical narratives. Visitors are invited to move through these spaces without following a single prescribed route, encountering fragments of stories, images and environments. Here, the city is understood as an active force that continually shapes how we remember, navigate, belong and imagine ourselves.
The exhibition is presented by DoMo Collective, a newly formed collective of London-based Korean curators and creative producers. The collective emerged through conversations among practitioners who, despite sharing similar experiences of living between places, realised that each had developed profoundly different emotional relationships with the city around them.
This theme resonates particularly within Peckham, one of London’s most culturally diverse neighbourhoods. Shaped by successive waves of migration, local histories and ongoing transformation, Peckham offers a fitting context for an exhibition that considers the city as something continually made and remade through movement, encounter and everyday experience.
Alongside the exhibition, Unanchored City presents a programme of public events designed to extend these ideas beyond the gallery space.
A participatory sound walking workshop invites audiences to navigate Copeland Park while searching for overlooked sounds, hidden rhythms, disappearing sounds and sounds behind other sounds. Using simple drawing and field-recording techniques, the group will collect, map and interpret the sounds they encounter before returning for a short collective reflection.
The exhibition will also present As You Wish, a site-responsive theatre performance that transforms the familiar setting of a job interview into an absurd exploration of urban life. Rather than depicting the city directly, the performance examines how invisible systems of evaluation, expectation and language shape individual behaviour through situations that maximise feelings of anxiety.
Rather than offering a single way of seeing the city, Unanchored City invites audiences to follow fragments of memory, observation, transition, desire and transformation, constructing their own emotional geography along the way.
