A free public cinema has been put up in a disused space in Brixton for a month, as part of a London-wide festival.

The London Festival of Architecture (LFA) has launched a cinema in a disused space in Brixton, with a range of free shows that celebrate the area’s rich heritage.

‘Views on the Atlantic’, from Brixton Community Cinema with Bamidele Awoyemi, Farouk Agoro and Livia Wang, forms a series of cinema installations at Atlantic Road and Windrush Square.

It is part of the London Festival of Architecture (LFA), set in disused space to offer residents the chance to ‘reimagine’ how space is used.

Until Sunday, July 2, the sites will be used for evening cinema screenings, exhibitions, and other programme activities.

This will include displays of archival photography and film gathered from local organisations and archives such as Lambeth Archives, Ritzy Cinema and Black Cultural Archives.

During the day, they will be used for ‘gathering, education and artistic expression’, along with a series of learning workshops.

The programme is curated collectively with a variety of individuals and collectives from south London, working at the intersection of culture and social justice. They were asked to choose a film they would like to share with the public with this year’s LFA theme of ‘In Common’ in mind. Click here to see the full programme.

Gianluca Rizzo, Managing Director, Brixton BID, who is supporting the project, said: “The London Festival of Architecture represents the best opportunity to reimagine places. At the Brixton BID, our ambition is to allow people to reclaim spaces for social and economic activity.”
