QPR boss adamant there will be no cheap sales

GARETH Ainsworth says rival clubs can forget about trying to grab a bargain from Loftus Road before transfer deadline.

The Hoops boss is aware money is in short supply right now, with Ilias Chair one potential asset who has been linked with Championship rivals Leicester City.

Ainsworth is realistic enough to know anything can happen between now and next Friday when the window shuts.

But any departures will come at a cost for the buyer.

“I want to keep the best players at QPR – that is what I want to do as a manager,” he explained.

“We will see what happens but there is no way we will give players away for cheap. There is no chance.

“It is something the board have been adamant about that there is no urgency to push players out of here and I’m trying to keep the best players here and still add to it.

“That could be difficult but the six I’ve brought in I’ve been really pleased with.”

QPR could be set for an unexpected windfall from a potential Manchester City swoop for Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze.

Eze came through the ranks at Loftus Road before departing for Palace three years ago, although his former side could be set for 20 percent of any sale to the treble winners.

“If that happened then I would be really, really grateful,” admitted a smiling Ainsworth.

“Man City – he is one hell of a player. I wouldn’t say no to signing him!”

Next up for Ainsworth’s side is a trip to Southampton this weekend to face unbeaten opponents recently relegated from the Premier League.

QPR played well in last week’s 1-0 defeat to high-flying Ipswich and the manager is demanding more of the same but this time with a different outcome.

He said: “Results are important to me, of course they are.

“They are what get you the job and keep you in the job but our performance (v Ipswich) I was really, really proud of.

“If we can perform like we did again we will get results in time. I’m asking for a consistent performance.

“Southampton is going to be tough but I think Sinclair Armstrong has an opportunity to exploit a big pitch – there is plenty of space to run into.

“When we get the ball we’ve got to keep it like we’ve been keeping it and give our forward players a rest sometimes and make some passes by keeping control of possession.

“These are all new things with the new style that I am trying to implement here.

“It is just about consistency of performance.”

Ainsworth added: “Both the Norwich and Ipswich games, and definitely the Cardiff game, we would all sit here and say we can see the positives in performances since the weeks before that. It is just consistency and keeping players fit.

“We are playing against a Premier League squad on Saturday and we’ve got to make sure we are at our best.

“It is going to be a really good test and I’m looking forward to that because with Middlesbrough away the week after it isn’t going to be any easier.

“I’m looking forward to being at home again but these are good away trips with good followings from the fans.

“I think they are going to play a big part and consistency of performance is what I’m asking for from the boys.”

QPR may still only have one victory to their name so far but the boss is quick to point out things have considerably improved since the opening day 4-0 drubbing at Vicarage Road.

Ainsworth said: “Take the Watford game out of it and I’m pleased with our start.

“Obviously we can’t take the Watford game out of it so I am working on a bit behind where we want to be.

“If I’d have got my act together sooner on that one we’d have maybe been a bit higher in the table.

“From last Saturday where we are a fraction away from four points in the league and probably sitting mid-table rather than having three points and being 17th.

“It’s no disaster and there is no massive panic. I can see some real good building signs here and the future with some of these young players is really bright.

“A bit of patience – that’s all I’m asking.”
