Katia Kesic has a solo exhibition of ceramics at Shtager Gallery: WHEN PERSONAL BECOMES VERNACULAR: MYTHOLOGY OF EVERYDAY
The artist moved to London from her native Moscow in 2012. An architecture and interior design graduate as well as a fine artist, her creative practice is concerned with the intersection of domestic functionality and traditions rooted in mythology. Her work has been exhibited extensively across Russia and the UK.
Kesic describes her ceramics as memory vessels. Placing equal importance on form and function as on rituals and meaning, her work explores the effect that inner and outer worlds have on our sense of identity.
With a unique visual language based on symbolisms inspired by modern culture and ancient mythologies, the artist blurs the lines between personal experiences and observations on broader themes like beauty and sexuality, immigration or the environment. Presented against a setting of architectural maquettes, the ceramics appear equally imposing and fragile.
Shtager Gallery was established in 2016 with the aim to introduce contemporary Russian artists to the British and wider public. Sharing its exhibition space with a prominent museum and exhibition design consultancy, the gallery builds creative bridges between cultures, concepts and contexts.
