The Elves & the Shoemaker – a sensory, immersive adaptation from the Brothers Grimm story that is accessible for all including those with dementia and PMLD/SEND

The Dot Collective open their new production for the public before touring to care homes this Christmas transforming spaces with all the aesthetics of professional theatre.

Adapted, devised and performed by the ensemble of four professional actors/clown artists/puppeteers/playwrights and artistic director of The Dot Collective Laura Harling, this production brings the Brothers Grimm story to life through music, puppetry, dance and the most festive of theatre! To be enjoyed across all generations, witty and full of wonder, accessible for all.

Written in 1806 by the Brothers Grimm the tale was originally the first and longest story in a series of three fairy tales entitled The Elves. It follows a failing shoemaker at Christmas time, who one morning awakes to discover a perfect pair of shoes. Each morning the same mysterious occurrence takes place, helping him make his fortune. A story of hard work rewarded, the perfect treat for a frosty afternoon.

The Dot Collective was formed in 2016 to provide innovative theatre of a high, professional standard that’s accessible and cognitively stimulating for those living in care, particularly older people and those living with dementia. They facilitate sensory activities and professional theatre that create in-the-moment joyful experiences, reconnecting people with their history, uniting families, reducing isolation and improving the provision of creative activities and ultimately, improving the quality of life in care. Their productions are engaging for everyone, with a professional team, they transform spaces, immersing their audiences into the world of the play bringing the aesthetics that one would expect when going to the theatre.

Speaking of the work, Laura Harling, Producer//Director comments, “I feel guilty to call my work ‘work’ – it is a privilege to engage with our audiences in care and be invited into their homes again this Christmas after two, hard years of isolation. We put access needs at the forefront of our creating process, working with sensory advisors and experts. Accessible theatre only means it’s even more engaging for anyone who defines themself as neuro-typical – it really is theatre for everyone no matter age or ability – it will warm you from the soles of your feet and get you in the festive spirit!”
