I do like a change of scenery every now and again so a chance to see a bit of Shakespeare at the relatively new Sam Wanamaker Playhouse was greatly received. The place was literally packed to the rafters. It is a very small space and, as I found to my misfortune, claustrophobic, writes Lizzie Paul.

I’ve seen a few productions of  Henry V but this one is very different to what I have seen before. It is acted in modern-day clothing which left me disappointed. I like my Shakespeare with lavish costumes, otherwise, it is just dry and left to those with far more intellectual, and less ‘bling’ tastes than my own.

We see the recently bereaved King Henry V trying out his new crown for size. But, not content with ruling England, he wants France too, claiming lineage from his ancestor, Edward III.  Predictably, there’s a war, with Henry at first acting like a complete and utter wimp and then evolving into this British Lion, with rousing speeches and plenty of ‘hurrahs’ to the point of panto-style thigh-slapping. This brings me on to the women acting as men, all laddish rousting and shouting.  Far from convincing, they put me in mind of ‘Bob’ in Blackadder.  Overdone.

The Morris dancing, however, was a joy, as was the authentic period music played by the musicians behind the backdrop.

Unfortunately, I was taken ill and could not return for part two so I cannot really give a fair assessment of the whole performance.

However, the amount of special effects that can be done in a tiny space is amazing. The candlelight makes for a very magical space and the lighting and backdrop made for an enchanting scene amid the fighting and gore!
