CRYSTAL Palace defender Marc Guehi says he is prepared to play wherever Gareth Southgate asks him as the youngster prepares to continue his impressive international career.
The composed young central defender from Grove Park earned plenty of praise for a commanding first half performance in last month’s victory over Scotland.
Sadly injury meant Guehi didn’t appear after the break but he is back and raring to go ahead of England’s upcoming Wembley dates with Australia and Italy.
Asked by Talksport if his favoured position was on the left or right of central defence, the youngster explained it is far more important to be versatile than stick solely to one role.
Guehi explained: “I used to have a preference. I’d say I preferred left but I think in this day and age as a player you need to be adaptable.
“Right now I’m good with either/or. I think it’s good to learn the other positions as well, left-back or right-back, because you never know where you will be called.
“It is really important for me just to be adaptable.”
The Palace ace added: “I think I’m comfortable wherever the manager tells me to play. It’s important to know the roles and responsibilities of each and every position.
“It definitely helps you because the versatility a player needs, it definitely helps.
“There could be a few injuries and you could be called to play in different positions that you are not used to but it only helps yourself and aides the team.
“Wherever the manager asks me to play I’m there to play.
“Wing-back might be a bit too high for me – a bit too much running! But anywhere across the back four is good.”
It was confirmed earlier this week England and the other home nationals will be hosting the European Championships in 2028.
Guehi will be 27 when the tournament gets underway and believes the Three Lions have a great chance of home success considering the U21s have recently just won the Euros.
The defender said: “I’m excited for everyone else.
“It’s amazing for the UK and Ireland.
“For so many people, hopefully that inspires so many young people to go out there and be their best selves.
“It is just great for all of our nations to be involved and to experience such an amazing sporting event.”
He added: “It’s amazing. Hopefully a lot of those players are playing for the seniors by then.
“I think it is always great to have winning experience and to be winning at that age is definitely going to be an amazing factor to have and to take into a massive tournament.”
