Young artists from South East London come together to create Out of Harm’s Way, a festival of new performances, research and artworks presented by youth collective Sounds Like Chaos at the Albany, Deptford Lounge and online.
Headline events in the festival include a new theatre piece and creative campaign, The Body Remembers, aimed at giving a voice to young women from Lewisham who have experienced sexual harassment and assault. Written and performed by 18-year-old artist Rofeda Bougaga, the project brings together a group of six young women who will creatively campaign on the issue and invite the audience to take part in a post-show workshop where they can make suggestions on how to make Lewisham a safer borough for young women. Amaarah Roze will continue the dialogue with a women’s safety special of her unique event Standards, an evening of art, performance and conversations.
Additionally Out Of Harm’s Way will see the launch of the findings from two research projects: People, Places, Poetry, a youth-led peer-research project conducted by creatives Aleksa Asme and Kaylah Jackson, uncovering where young people in South London go when they are not at home and school and how the spaces young people occupy impact on their mental health.
All events will be free or pay-what-you-decide, making them accessible to everyone regardless of their situation.
The Albany, Douglas Way, Deptford, SE8 4AG from 10th – 16th July.
