‘There truly is nothing quite like’
The Rocky Horror Show manages to live up to its notorious reputation, grabbing the audience’s focus and not letting it go until the very end. With Jason Donovan taking a starring role as the legendary Dr. Frank’N’Furter and a wickedly talented group filling the other iconic characters, it is easy to see why the camp cult classic has remained so popular, writers Melina Block.
On the hottest day of the year, it is hard to not feel a deep sense of sympathy for the performers in a show which involves a whole lot of frantic dancing and tight leather. To be fair, by the end of the show most of the cast is just in lingerie; a relief for them and, I’m sure, the adoring Jason Donovan devotees filling the theatre.

Donovan provides more than just a big name to draw in audiences, however, with his shockingly powerful singing and quick comedic timing ensuring he has more than earned such a coveted lead. Stacey Monahan’s vocals as the not-so-naive Janet also shine, as does the commanding physicality with which Jayme-Lee Zanoncelli performs as the manic and hilarious Columbia. A special acknowledgment must certainly also be given to the narrator: Comedian Nathan Caton. He doesn’t miss a beat, presiding over the show with the kind of witty, relaxed confidence that only complete faith in your own talents can produce – a faith which he proves is entirely well founded.
Prior to this evening, I had only ever seen the film version of The Rocky Horror Show. After finally getting to witness for myself what has enraptured audiences and sparked conversation for so many decades, I can firmly say that there truly is nothing quite like The Rocky Horror Show. The absolutely bonkers storyline, the outrageous comedy and of course the ridiculously fun musical numbers are all elevated by a cast and audience who clearly have such a deep love for all things Rocky. There are very few other shows which could convince a blisteringly hot theatre to get up and dance in the middle of the UK summer.
