An art exhibition has come to Surrey Quays from an artist raising issues about homelessness at Christmastime.
Marc Walters, who was homeless himself for a time, will show some of his work in the Surrey Quays Shopping centre gallery – The Art of Isolation’s Artist in the Window through December.
Marc’s work is about homelessness, mental health and also tackles issues of consumerism. A large piece in the display is called ‘I’m A Book Just Like You, Please Don’t Judge Me.’
Marc explains: “That piece is about how we use our money, and the money that gets wasted around Christmas time – whether that’s on presents or food.
“I was homeless for a while, it was Christmas time in the 1990s and I was sleeping in my car. Even my friends didn’t know about it.
“It was hard and I was embarrassed. It made me realise about all the small things that are really hard to do when you’re homeless, like having a wash, brushing your teeth…
“Lots of homeless people used to have good jobs, like teachers, office workers. Anybody can end up homeless.
“I hope these people are not forgotten over Christmas, I volunteer at Rotherhithe Community Kitchen, and last week we gave away 150 meals to the homeless.”
Marc’s artwork, on display until Dec 30, are mixed media, using spray paint, neon lights, glow-in-the-dark paint and found objects including toys and clocks.
It is displayed alongside that of his niece, Sasha Walters who is also an artist.
Sasha’s work, entitled ‘Perfect Imperfection’, is made up of three large white pieces constructed from plaster and acrylic paint on canvas.
She said: “I use this medium because it allows me to feel free and have control at the same time.”
