Free Events for all ages
Pat Kingwell and Erika Huartos Castaneda have organised Bermondsey’s first literary festival.
Over eleven days in March there will be walks, talks, museum visits and performances that are free to attend and will cater for everyone’s tastes at all ages, in various venues around the area.
The festival will highlight just how far Bermondsey has come since those pre-1965 days when it was its own Metropolitan Borough of Bermondsey and pretty much solely based around industry and social housing for the workers. Back then there no restaurants, no art galleries, and no groups of walkers being given history lessons around The Mayflower and St Mary’s Church.
These days, Bermondsey Street is an international destination spot for foodies; street art and murals abound, as do art galleries. And we also have a museum that commemorates the world famous Peek Frean biscuit factory – which will be part of the festival.
During the festival, people can listen to talks on various Bermondsey-based topics in Blue Anchor Library, Canada Water Library, listen to selected readings, perform poetry in a bookshop and Deli Felice, take a guided walk and hear all about The Blue, or visit Appleby Blue and learn about the many postcards of Bermondsey that were sent around the world in Georgian times – The Golden Age of Postcards.
Writers, historians and other creatives will be on hand to provide information, entertainment and fun for all ages.
