The world’s panoramic canvas was securely rolled up, folded or boxed for safety and put into what seemed like indefinite storage during the early months of this remarkable year.

As part of the new season Bermondsey Project Space invited painter Alan Rankle to curate an exhibition. The result is Unfurl, where the artists’ works collectively unfold like a banner into the breeze of changing skies, to signal the recognition of a fast approaching totally unpredictable, constantly changing, scenario.

Oska Lappin: My Girl Friday 2020

Unfurl features the works of a group of accomplished and challenging artists, all painters, who share an interest in making clear and confident commentaries on modern life while referencing and evolving the methods and techniques of classic painting.

The exhibition features paintings and prints by ANTHONY EYTON RA, CLAUDIA DE GRANDI, OSKA LAPPIN, MATTHEW RADFORD and CHARLOTTE SNOOK.

To accompany Unfurl is a selection of the Rankle’s works from his seminal 1998 series Terre Verte up to his recent series Mothland premiered at the gallery in 2019.

Known for his large scale paintings and in-situ projects, often involving collaborations with architects, designers and fellow artists, Rankle takes as his main subject the development of landscape art as a concept related to changes in attitude to the environment.

In some works he treats the entire history of landscape painting almost as a found object; manipulating and cross-referencing styles and techniques from diverse periods and cultures.

Unfurl and Alan Rankle’s works (1998 – 2020) are on at Bermondsey Project Space, Bermondsey Street, SE1 3UW from 1 – 12 September. Times: Tue – Sat: 11.00 – 18.00. Admission: Free.
