Drama, laughter and high emotions
Dulwich-based writer, Susan Gillie, originally aspired to be a scientist and studied Natural Sciences at Cambridge. However, partly enforced by moving with her husband and two sons between London, Yorkshire, Montreal and Switzerland, she instead had a very varied career. Having built up, then selling, a small chain of estate agencies, she became actively involved in the non-profit sector, volunteering and chairing various charities.
Finally back in London and increasingly concerned about climate change, Susan has weaved this world problem into her first novel – A Chance Encounter – that showcases the protagonist Elizabeth Trenchard’s role as a consulting engineer while she navigates the need for adaptation in these changing times.
A Chance Encounter explores the intricate dynamics of family life through contemporary themes, unusual characters, and high-stakes drama. The story unfolds as Elizabeth encounters a strangely dressed man who becomes a pivotal friend and business opportunity for her husband, while also potentially becoming part of her family. The second ‘chance encounter’ arises from an unexpected enquiry from a Scottish landowner that brings major consequences for the Trenchard family.
Set in the vibrant landscapes of London, the breath-taking Highlands, and Inverness, the novel centres on the family’s struggle as they confront the shocking revelation that one of their sons, Callum, is involved in drug dealing. As Callum grapples with the shame of being manipulated by his girlfriend, the narrative highlights a contemporary issue that successful families might never expect to face.
Susan explains, “Many years ago, for a writing course, I wrote a short story about meeting a very oddly dressed man on the Underground. About three years ago, re-reading it while being a member of a small group of friends (all writing full length work) I was inspired to make him a character in the novel I had begun to write. The story is unusual, has drama, laughter, high emotions and some beautiful scenery. There are some very interesting characters, and themes of current relevance. It has general appeal for novel readers, perhaps particularly for parents of teens and early twenties, who might be faced with similarly devastating family events.”
With its blend of drama, laughter, and evocative scenery, A Chance Encounter brings important and relatable issues to the forefront.
Currently, Susan is busy writing another novel, continuing to explore the rich tapestry of human experiences that resonate with readers.
