A world of resonance in the ebb and flow of metaphorical waves of sound

Eva Maria Doroszkowska will be performing a live concert from Sands Films Studio – At The Whim Of A Wave.

Opening with Chopin’s soul-searching Polonaise – Fantasie written in the twilight of his life, a tidal wave of mystery introduces the piece which, by the power of suggestion, spans throughout the work. Oscillating between melancholic lyricism and nostalgic heroic gestures, it is broad ranging in the sweep of its art and remains an enigma of the piano repertoire.

In contrast, Dutilleux’s Au gres Des Ondes, “The play of the waves,” was written as incidental music for radio with a pun on the air wave inherent in the title. Reflecting the past combined with the currents of the present in miniature form, they serve as a reaction to the tumultuous changing world of the post-war era. Dutilleux explores the magic of timber in short interludes with joyful bursts of colour.

Influenced by an artistic illustration depicting mythical inhabitants of the sea, the Polish composer, Ro?z?ycki composed “Gra Fal,” “the play of the waves,” in the wake of a cruise on the Baltic sea which the composer took shortly after graduating from Warsaw conservatory. Influenced by the impressionistic harmonies of French composers at the turn of the century, the work combines the dynamic energy and force of the sea, alluding to the ancient mystery that envelops the ocean depths.

To conclude the programme, two of the late Estonian composer Ester Ma?gi’s sea tableaux, reflect once more on the magic of the Baltic Sea. A composer who was influenced heavily by Estonian folk music and nature, Magi conjures up subtle textures which interplay with archaic melodies in sentiments describing the invisible elements of nature.

A programme of mystery and inner fantasy permeates throughout, in a playful ode to the magic of the waves.

Eva says, ‘This programme is inspired by a love of the sea and the freedom that open water represents. Living on an island the sea equates with escapism, travelling to distant shores and experiencing new sights and scents. Since the age of 4, picking out notes on the small piano at home, the magic of conjuring up a world of adventure has never left me and the ability to experience and embrace an openness and spirit of adventure is one I do not take for granted.

Every composer I have chosen has the unique ability to utilise the piano to create their own individual sound world for they are all pianist-composers. They take us through their own thoughts creating their own personal language of thoughts. The piano of all instruments has the freedom to explore sound and timbres without the necessity of any other musician to supply harmony or support.

During lockdown, the restrictions highlighted my personal need to value freedom and the ability to follow a whim and I feel grateful to be able to express that here.

Join us in person or online for another unique live concert from Sands Films Studio. “At The Whim Of A Wave” explores the piano’s world of resonance in the ebb and flow of metaphorical waves of sound.’
