Tara White’s exhibition ‘Beyond These Walls There’s Courage’ tenderly maps the entangled dynamics between grief, intergenerational relationships, gender and protest. Operating in the overlaps between these frames of experience,
Tara White uses the Anjili Ironwood Tree and Saffron Crocuses as botanical motifs to anchor their explorations of grief on both micro and macro scales.
Building on archival research conducted at The Women’s Art Library at Goldsmiths, Beyond These Walls There’s Courage examines everyday intricacies of performance, questioning how we might censor or distort our behaviours in public and private realms. The emotional contours of grief are digested through speculative fictions, as Tara stresses the role of collectivity in both familial and activist environments. Moving fluidly between sculpture, photography and print, this exhibition serves as an ode to overlooked elders who laid the foundation for the current Women Life Freedom uprisings, whilst Tara decidedly carves space for queer representation within this political sphere.
Tara White(b. 1997) is a mixed-media artist combining the investigation of material qualities with inherited histories, gender, imagined narratives and archival research. She is the recipient of Goldsmith’s Exhibitions Hub Alumni Award 2023. Beyond These Walls There’s Courage is commissioned by Goldsmiths Exhibitions Hub, in partnership with The Women’s Art Library and Southwark Park Galleries.

Join members of A Particular Reality, Michelle Williams Gamaker and Tara White, for an in-conversation exhibition tour of Beyond These Walls There’s Courage. Meeting in Salter Space at 2pm, we’ll begin to unpack themes of gender, grief, heritage, protest and the feelings that emanate from the exhibition. All are welcome, and we encourage open discussion and sensitivity towards others.
Michelle Williams Gamaker is an artist filmmaker who explores identity and a love of cinema through a critically affectionate interrogation of casting and genre.
A Particular Reality is a collective of university art department staff, students and alumni with a commitment to building creative learning environments upon the values of equity and care. They intend to forge connections across creative disciplines amongst students, educators and makers.
