Whimsical writing and larger than life performances

Shakespeare’s supernatural characters are reimagined in Rough Magic; the family-friendly comedy hoping to introduce children to the world of the Bard, writes Melina Block.

We, the audience, are cast as apprentices to the Weird Sisters – the three witches still recovering from the fallout of ‘The Macbeth Incident’. As we meet fairies, ghosts, monsters and shadows, we are taken on a journey through this magical realm, exploring along the way whether one’s destiny can ever be changed.

This Olivier Award-nominated production is primarily geared towards children, but its whimsical writing and larger than life performances are sure to engage the older members of the audience. Each fantastical character and creature is given a distinct design and personality, capturing the imaginations of the young audience and drawing them into this mythical world of spell books and pet monsters. The children are even encouraged to take part in the show, helping drive forwards the story as the cast directly interacts and effortlessly incorporates their audience’s responses and actions.

The Shakespeare references may initially go over some of the little ones’ heads. Eventually, however, a summarised version of ‘The Macbeth Incident’ is re-enacted, providing what is likely to be the first taste of Shakespeare for many of the children watching. It is not only Macbeth that is referenced, with A Midsummer Night’s Dream’s Puck also being a key character and a few other plays alluded to. These references are woven in nicely, allowing for a few ‘if you know, you know’ moments that got the adults in the theatre laughing.

If you’re looking for a summer holiday outing to both entertain and educate the family, then Rough Magic definitely delivers. And even the most cynical of grown-ups are likely to be enchanted by the opportunity to watch a modern interpretation of Shakespeare’s classic characters in the historical setting of the Globe.

Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, Shakespeare’s Globe, Bankside, SE1 9DT until 23rd August. £15 – £30.
