One night only
Located in Peckham, South London, Asylum Chapel is a Grade II listed space with almost 200 years of history. Established in or around 1827, it formed the heart of the Licensed Victuallers’ Benevolent Institution Asylum, with ‘asylumʼ originally meaning sanctuary.
The chapel has survived a remarkable history, including being almost completely gutted by an incendiary bomb during the Second World War.
Remarkably, its iconic stained glass windows and carved stone funerary monuments survived. Decades later, the chapel was used as a costume store before being left derelict, eventually returning to life as a space for art, exhibitions and creative projects in 2010.

Against this backdrop, Toxic Arts presents Asylum, bringing together 11 artists from around the world, all now based in the UK. Each artist brings their own distinctive practice and perspective to contemporary art, creating a diverse group exhibition within a space shaped by its own history of change, survival and renewal.
The title Asylum reflects the history of the building itself, from its original meaning of sanctuary to its life today as a space for creativity and contemporary art.
Lily Bunney, Joey Sare, Kirsty Bell, Gareth Luxton, Luyu-Ming, Bill Chalmers, Tomas Gittins, Louis Wootton-Davies, Amos Nappo, Duncan Mosley and Nohana Sayama are the exhibiting artists.
