There’s a certain kind of night out on a weeknight. Arrive early and it’s £1 on the door – and all the tunes are bangers.

Welcome to £1 Thursdays at Club Ocean, where you can sing almost all the words to Mr. Brightside, Club Can’t Handle Me, Lose Yourself, and Call Me Maybe at the top of your lungs.

In a production commissioned by the Finborough Theatre comes the world premiere of award-winning playwright Kat Rose-Martin £1 Thursdays.

17 year olds Jen and Stacey are best friends. Since forever. Stacey always dreamed of being a dancer. And she’s actually got the talent for it. Only her school career advisor hasn’t even been to London, let alone heard of Urdang.

Jen is smart. Like Oxbridge smart. But all ‘smart’ gives her is the ability to see that there’s no use trying to change the story prewritten for her – growing up in an underfunded and forgotten Bradford in the 2010s.

Club Ocean is more than just perverts and sticky floors. It’s Freedom. Freedom from controlling boyfriends, menopausal mums, and the dreaded finality of having to leave school. The Freedom to get messy, peel themselves off pavements, and wake up knowing they’d pulled someone last night and hoping they were at least a 6 out of 10.

An honest and real coming of age story, £1 Thursdays captures and celebrates the trials and tribulations of what it means to be young, Northern and working class – when for one Vodka-blurred second, you’re allowed to forget everything else and just DANCE.

Playwright Kat Rose-Martin is a Bradford born and based writer, actor, and the inaugural winner of the Kay Mellor Fellowship. She was recently nominated for the Royal Television Society Yorkshire One to Watch Award.

£1 Thursdays is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
