Based on the novel by Jules Verne and adapted and directed by Juliet Forster, this brand-new, fun and colourful comedy-drama tells the story of Around The World In Eighty Days as you’ve never seen it before, with a pre-show workshop with Rosemary J Brown as an added bonus.
A band of travelling performers embark on their most daring feat yet: to recreate the adventures of Phileas Fogg as he sets off on his race around the world.
But this is a telling of two tales; fact meets fiction as we learn the incredible true story of American journalist Nellie Bly who emulated the character of Phileas in her record-breaking trip.
Watch the drama and hilarity unfold, as two tales intertwine in a riotous romp around the globe in York Theatre Royal’s production.
Rosemary J Brown, a London-based journalist and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society will be giving a workshop at 6pm on Friday 21st July about Nellie Bly.
She says, ‘I was astonished that Jules Verne’s fictional character Phileas Fogg was known by most, but few had ever heard of journalist Nellie Bly who circled the world faster than him in 1889 – completing the journey in 72 days. It’s wonderful that this remarkable production brings Nellie Bly and her amazing achievements back to life.’
As the author of Following Nellie Bly: Her Record-Breaking Race Around the World (Pen and Sword 2021), I re-enacted her global journey 125 years later aiming to get her ‘back on the map.’
Churchill Theatre, High Street, Bromley, BR1 1HA from 19th – 22nd July.
