Maritime European tapestries being explored in Greenwich

The National Maritime Museum in Greenwich is hosting ‘Weaving Waves: The History and Conservation of Maritime Tapestries’ this Friday January 12.

While worlds and often oceans apart, between the 15th and 18th centuries, the production of European tapestries were as readily invested in as maritime navies and trading companies by those in power.

The two often went hand-in-hand too, with weavers commissioned to stitch maritime scenes onto tapestries.

Fast forward several hundred years and many of these designs are useful records of historical significance. But, due to their size, weight and delicacy, tapestries can pose some challenges for museums and curators.

At this National Maritime Museum conference, you can hear all about it as both the history and conservation of maritime tapestries are being explored.

National Maritime Museum, Romney Road, London SE10 9NF / or join online.

January 12, 9am.

Admission: £30 in person/£20 online.
