Meat Back on the Menu at Theatre 503

Written by Irish playwright Gillian Greer, MEAT premiered at Theatre503 in 2020 and was shortlisted for the Theatre503 International Playwriting Award. The play is a provocative and darkly comic exploration of class, consent and transgressions buried in the past.

When Ronan’s former girlfriend Max turns up at his fashionable Liverpool restaurant, he is determined to prove how far he has come. But Max has something much bigger to discuss. Over the course of one wine-soaked evening, old wounds are exposed, loyalties are tested and new truths begin to emerge.

As Max and Ronan confront their shared history, the play asks what happens when two people remember the same night in radically different ways. How can a couple navigate their past when their memories no longer match? Who has the power to decide which version of events becomes the truth?

Directed by Yanlin Zhang, this production stars George Andrew-Clarke as Ronan, Lily Maguire as Max and Cynthia Zhou as Jo. The creative team includes set designer Islay Sage, sound designer Phoebe Bennett, lighting designer Holly Higgs and stage manager Jaimie Westwell.
