Review—Barnum: The Circus Musical @ New Wimbledon Theatre

A display of sensational, frenzied entertainment.

Frequently applied to the ministers and policymakers ruling over us from Westminster, the word circus has become shorthand for any chaotic fanfare similar to that found – albeit less frequently these days – inside large red tents filled with elephants, contortionists and politically incorrect ‘freak shows’, writes Melina Block.

One man who found himself involved in both the political and literal circus was P.T. Barnum, inspiration for The Greatest Showman, an excellent piece of PR spin for a figure whose actual life story is decidedly more nefarious than the family friendly, Hugh Jackman-fronted musical would have you believe. Slightly more willing to dip ever so slightly into the murkier aspects of Barnum’s past, his story is being told again for theatre audiences in Barnum: The Circus Musical.

In keeping with the elaborate spectacle of circus, this musical does not partake in subtlety or nuance. The second half of the show is really where the absurdity ramps up, particularly when the death of Barnum’s beloved—and far more likeable—wife (Monique Young) is portrayed via the introduction of a number of juggling performers escorting her off stage. If you choose to view the later portion of Barnum as a surrealist, avant-garde piece of experimental theatre, then the bizarre pacing can be ignored and the genuinely impressive, relentlessly energetic performances of the cast can be appreciated as the true highlight of the evening.

Despite some issues with the sound mixing that make it hard to follow all the lines of dialogue and singing, the cast really is the best thing about Barnum. Each of them performing mind-boggling tricks and routines with such enthusiasm and passion that would charm even the sternest of critics.

And if not for the ragtag assortment of unusual and exciting talent, why go to the circus at all? In that sense, Barnum: The Circus Musical is a true-to-its-name display of sensational, frenzied entertainment.

New Wimbledon Theatre until 3rd October.
