A fun, festive and tongue-in-cheek night out

Diversity take to the stage in Robin Hood with a South London takeover of Sherwood Forest that spreads seasonal cheer throughout the SW19 theatre, with dance, magic and plenty of cultural references making it one to remember, writes Evie Flynn.

The star-studded cast saw Ashley Banjo and Diversity transform into Robin Hood and his steadfast Merry Men, while magician Pete Firman wowed the audience in his role as the comic sidekick, Will Scarlett, in this Christmas panto written by Harry Michaels with additional material by Pete Firman.

Diversity dance troupe rose to fame after winning Britain’s Got Talent in 2009, with OG members Ashley and Jordan Banjo and Perri Kiely returning to the stage for the show, so every time the group took to the stage, the crowd’s excitement was palpable when they perform a combination of flips, breakdancing and comedic flair. And despite the plot taking a backseat in favour of action-packed dance scenes, the production and spectacle made up for it.

It’s not only great for youngsters, with a few cheeky ‘6–7’ jokes thrown in there, but also fantastic for adults, with large groups of friends enjoying a unique night out, or perhaps a work Christmas party in the audience. Hence a number of well-timed political references, with references to Rachel Reeves, Keir Starmer and Prince Andrew.

The absence of a classic pantomime dame was noticeable, but Pete Firman’s performance as the cheeky Will Scarlett had everyone chuckling – although you were never quite sure whether you were laughing with him or at him.

A special mention should go to the sweet voice of Lauren Hampton as Maid Maryam, whose stamina worked overtime during the energetic dance scenes, which she performed while singing. And although the menacing Sheriff of Nottingham (Steve Arnott), may have a secondary role, his villainous presence still earns plenty of boos and hisses from the crowd.

The staging was bright and bold, and the transition scenes kept the audience entertained while set changes took place. Even the costumes managed to spread Christmas joy, with The Spirit of Sherwood’s outfits stealing the show. Amelia Walker in the traditional ‘fairy godmother role, got to wear the robes that brought the glam and glitter.

There was a mixture of well-known songs throughout the performance, which had the audience clapping and singing along – from Michael Jackson’s Thriller to Gangnam Style. Even the interval felt joyful and Christmassy, with classic Wham! and Wizzard tunes belting out.

If you’re looking for a fun, festive and tongue-in-cheek night out, this show is definitely one to check out.
