Review: Top Hat at New Wimbledon Theatre

A musical not to be missed

There’s something ironically comforting about the unattainable glamour of classic American musicals. Maybe it is the escapism, or the allusion to an (admittedly not realistic or accessible for most) elegant, simpler time of life. Top Hat, the musical adaptation of the 1935 film, is the epitome of such old Hollywood charm. Glitzy ballgowns, dapper suits, art deco backdrops: this production has it all – as well as serving as a rather compelling argument to make tap dancing a central element of musicals again, writes Melina Block.

Following American dancer Jerry as he pursues the headstrong Dale (Lucy St. Louis) across Europe in a series of comedic escapades and romantic interludes, Top Hat is a lighthearted tale of miscommunication and misadventure, set to essential Irving Berlin tracks from the Great American Songbook.

Phillip Attmore is particularly spectacular as Jerry, commanding the stage effortlessly and oozing star-power and charisma as he taps, spins and glides through each song and dance.

The musical numbers are truly the highlight of this show. Even the most virulent theatre hater will be familiar with at least one of the tunes and hearing them live reminds you why they have endured for nearly a century. The dancing is also thrilling, from sweeping ballroom to perfectly timed, dizzyingly fast tap numbers. Tap dancing may have fallen out of favour with modern choreographers and no longer be such a core element of dancers’ training, but Top Hat is a powerful reminder as to why this style was – and in my opinion, deserves to once again be – such a staple on the stage. The striking impact of an entire cast tapping at breakneck speed in perfect unison is really a delight to watch.

Top Hat truly is a testament to what made the golden age of Hollywood so alluring. The charming writing, uber-talented performers and memorable show tunes ensure that this is a musical not to be missed.
