After a successful run at the Grimeborn Opera Festival, Arcola Theatre, Green Opera’s innovative production of Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle comes to the Asylum Chapel, Peckham on 13th, 14th and 18th September! The last performance is PAY WHAT YOU CAN.
Judith stands on the threshold of Bluebeard’s Castle. Seven doors are locked before her. Needing to know what secrets lie beyond the doors and within the man she loves, she steps into the darkness.
Green Opera brings together artists with a passion for environmental practice in a unique combination of art-installation and theatre. This production of Bartók’s only opera explores the obsessive desire of an artist/muse relationship and how women interact with male fantasies projected upon them.
Directed by Eleanor Burke, conducted by John Paul Jennings, Bluebeard’s Castle features April Fredrick/ Anastasia Inniss as Judith, and James Corrigan/Julian Debreuil as Bluebeard. Performed in Hungarian with a new English translation in surtitles by Madeleine Trépanier and an orchestral arrangement by Thomas Ang.
The set and costumes were designed by Emeline Beroud in collaboration with Bristol-based artist Nina Brabbins from items found at Green Opera’s beach cleans with local communities throughout the UK, led in collaboration with Surfers Against Sewage, Rise Up Clean Up Margate, and Plastic Free Eastbourne.
Green Opera is the first environmentally-sustainable opera company, committed to delivering sustainable productions and educational projects that engage with climate change.
