The funeral of the legendary amateur boxing coach, who trained champions and positively impacted the lives of many, will take place later this month, on Tuesday, June 20.
Described as a “father to a thousand sons”, Steve Hiser tragically passed away on Friday, May 12 following a successful career both inside and outside the ring.
Former professional Hiser was in his 50th year at Fisher ABC after he started coaching there in 1973. When he soon became head coach, he helped to develop a number of champions, such as Ted Cheeseman, Lloyd Honeyghan and Peter McDonagh.
But the influence of Hiser, who was awarded the British Empire Medal in 2012, went way beyond the ring. He will be remembered as not only a coach but a mentor and paternal figure to everyone he trained.
Following his death last month, tributes from all over poured in.
Tributes pour in after legendary Fisher ABC coach Steve Hiser passes away
One was from his former student: Bermondsey’s Trevor Thirlwall, now a coach at the club, who knew Hiser for over 40 years.
Before he died, Steve asked that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Ringside Charitable Trust, which helps to support ex-boxers experiencing a difficult time.
The funeral will leave from F.A. Albin’s funeral home in time for an 11 am service at St James Church, Thurland Street, Bermondsey, SE16 4AA. The ceremony will be followed by a reception at the STC Club in New Eltham.
