Murder investigation under way following stabbing in Nunhead

A murder investigation is under way following a stabbing in Nunhead last night.

Police were called at 9:20pm on Sunday, 25 June to reports of a stabbing in Nunhead Green, near to the junction with Gordon Road.

It was reported a man in his 20s had suffered stab wounds and had been taken to hospital by a member of the public.

Despite the efforts of medical staff, the man died in hospital this morning at 09:30am (Monday, 26 June).

Police said his next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.

Enquiries into the circumstances are ongoing and there have been no arrests.

Detective Chief Inspector Laurence Smith from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command said: “We are in the very early stages of this investigation and my team are working diligently to piece together the events that led to this man losing his life.

“I would appeal to anyone who was in the area of Nunhead Green at around 21:20hrs on Sunday night and who saw any of this incident to get in contact. You may have information that could prove vital to this investigation.”

Detective Chief Superintendent Seb Adjei-Addoh, responsible for policing in Southwark and Lambeth said:  “I understand the concern that this incident will cause among the local community; another young man has lost his life to knife crime on our streets.

“You will see an increased police presence in the Peckham area over the coming days. This will include local community engagement officers who are there to listen and act on any concerns from our communities.”
