Plans have been revealed for two new blocks of flats stretching up to 21 storeys high beside Abbey Wood Elizabeth line station. The project, sent by Abbey Wood Sedgemere Limited, would deliver up to 200 new homes on the site on Sedgemere Road in Bexley.

The project would include blocks between seven and 21 storeys tall. It also plans to introduce a new public realm and landscaping in the area, as well as affordable housing. The developer said the scheme’s design was made to reduce the visual impact from the nearby Lesnes Abbey while also stopping the new buildings from feeling ‘overly blocky’.

Abbey Wood Sedgemere Limited said in a statement: “A number of height options have been tested which identified a taller, elegant building as the most attractive potential addition to the local skyline. Its unique location beside Abbey Wood rail station means it could lead to further improvements and investment for the local area.”

An application has been sent to Bexley Council to screen the site for the project. The authority previously gave permission for up to 219 flats to be built on the site in 2016, but the plans were never carried forward. The site, which sits beside the borough’s border with Greenwich, currently includes a car repair workshop and storage buildings.

A consultation event for the new scheme is being held on February 28. Feedback from locals will reportedly be used to inform the landscape and artwork around the site. The developer said it aims to submit a planning application for the scheme to Bexley Council later this year.

An Abbey Wood Sedgemere Limited spokesperson told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: “Our emerging plans for 4-8 Sedgemere Road build upon the existing planning consent for the site. The excellently located site can deliver a sustainable, design-led scheme capable of providing approximately 200 high quality rental homes for the local area, including affordable housing. This is in addition to new commercial space, and improvements to the local public realm, both on Harrow Manorway and along Sedgemere Road.”

They added: “We’re grateful to the local community for the interest expressed in our proposals to date. In addition to the public webinar being held this evening (Wednesday, February 28), we plan to continue engaging with local residents, elected politicians and Bexley Council before submitting a planning application later this year.”
