A South London private school could open three new padel courts to the public. Ibstock Place School, in Roehampton, wants to build the courts on existing playing fields for students and the community.
The popular racquet sport is usually played in doubles on an enclosed court, which is roughly one-third of the size of a tennis court. It is widely recognised as the world’s fastest-growing sport.
Planning documents said there was “significant unmet demand” for padel across London, however, and the project would introduce a new, accessible sport for students, The University of Roehampton and local community.
A security fence would be installed around the outdoor courts, which would be accessed via a gate. The facility would be fully accessible, with paths, level surfacing and wheelchair-friendly court access.
People would be able to book the courts online. They would be available between 8am and 10pm every day.

The documents said: “There is currently significant unmet demand for padel across London and this project offers an exciting opportunity to introduce a new, accessible sport for the school pupils, The University of Roehampton and the entire community to enjoy.
“The proposal will improve participation in the use of recreational facilities through the introduction of a development which creates space for a sporting activity.”
The school hopes to begin building the courts by summer, if the plans are approved by Wandsworth Council.
