MICHAEL Appleton believes new signing Rarmani Edmonds-Green’s versatility will be a huge asset to Charlton’s defence.
Edmonds-Green penned a deal at The Valley this afternoon until the summer of 2026 after joining from Huddersfield Town.
Although originally from south London, the Peckham-born defender began his professional career with the Terriers six years ago after they snapped him up from the Nike Academy.
He made 51 appearances for Huddersfield but has also enjoyed loan spells with Bromley, Swindon, Rotherham and Wigan.
The 25-year-old has spent most of the current campaign on the Terriers’ bench but will now be looking to establish himself as a first team regular under Appleton.
Charlton’s manager said: “Rarmani has got good experience in the Championship and League One.
“He’s got lots of quality on the ball, he’s very athletic and he’s quick. He gives us options across that backline, not just in the centre-half positions but across the wing-back positions as well.
“The fans will see his physical attributes and what he’s capable of very, very quickly.”
Edmonds-Green said he had no hesitation in returning to his local area once Charlton expressed an interest.
He explained: “I’m obviously a south London boy, so I’m buzzing to be here and be back home.
“As soon as I heard about the interest, I just wanted to get down here and get going.
“I spoke to Michael Appleton and I like his ideas and his style of play.”
Appleton was asked earlier today before Edmonds-Green’s capture was confirmed specifically how close the Addicks were to landing the new attacker they desperately still want.
The SE7 boss was reluctant to speculate on who that might be, but did hint he was feeling a lot more confident something would happen soon.
He said: “We are just close, that’s probably the most I can give you at the minute.
“Put it this way, I haven’t felt as if it (has been) this close so far. It feels as if it is almost touching distance.
“But I have been here before on many occasions, not just with Charlton, with all the football clubs I’ve been managing.
“So until it is agreed, until the player is in the building and the forms are signed, I’m not going to get too giddy and excited about it.
“But I’m definitely, certainly a lot more hopeful than probably I was a week or so ago on one or two deals.
“If that is the case, and we get them in and they come through the door, I can assure you there will be a lot of happy Charlton fans.”
