LYNDON Dykes’ superb stoppage time header secured QPR’s first home point of the season and a 1-1 draw against fellow strugglers Swansea City.
QPR trailed for much of the game after Asmir Begovic appeared to gift Josh Ginnelly his seventh minute opener, although manager Gareth Ainsworth claimed afterwards that goal shouldn’t have stood because of handball.
Scottish international striker Dykes, on as a second half substitute Sinclair Armstrong, was perfectly placed to head home Ilias Chair’s 92nd minute cross and prevent what looked like being yet another Loftus Road defeat.
Swansea finished the game with 10-men after substitute Ollie Cooper picked up two yellow cards in the 97th and 98th minutes as tempers frayed at the end.
But despite the dramatic finish and point saving heroics of Dykes, Ainsworth denied he was happy with the outcome.
The Hoops boss said: “Absolutely not, no. The Swansea goal is handball, a blatant handball if you watch the replays.
“It hits his hand and goes in but the referee has missed it.
“The assessor has just said to me, ‘Yeah, it is but we couldn’t really see it without VAR’.
“The rub of the green is going against us at the moment because we deserved a lot more out of that game tonight.”
Ainsworth challenged his side to be more ruthless in front of goal if they are to start climbing the Championship table.
He added: “We must hit the target more, we must work the opposition keeper more. We are creating too many chances now and we need to do that.
“Lyndon’s fantastic header there was that moment of brilliance in a game where we should really be scoring more goals.
“With the crosses we’ve got to be better, getting on the end of things we’ve got to be better, hitting the target has got to be better but we are creating chances. That is a good thing.
Some teams don’t create chances, some teams are struggling to.
“We are creating plenty, we’ve just got to finish them off now because we are playing a style that the boys are really enjoying. We’ve got a good identity about us.”
There is no let up for the Hoops who are back in action on Friday evening in front of the Sky Sports cameras at Birmingham, their third game in six days.
Ainsworth and his coaching team will have to get another committed display out of the squad and make sure the Hoops can claim three points instead of one at St Andrews.
He said: “Again at the final whistle we saw about seven or eight boys just collapse on the floor.
“They’ve emptied the tank again for me, which is fantastic.
“I’m disappointed we didn’t get more out of tonight but it would have been an absolute travesty if we hadn’t got a point.”
