COREY Blackett-Taylor capped his 26th birthday with a 94th minute goal to seal a 3-1 win for Charlton over Wycombe in Michael Appleton’s first home in charge.

Miles Leaburn’s first half opener was cancelled out by Freddie Potts nine minutes after the break.

Substitute Slobodan Tedic restored the Addicks’ advantage just two minutes after coming on before birthday boy Blackett-Taylor wrapped up the points late on with a smart finish.

He told Charlton TV: “I think before the game if I’d told anyone that was speaking to me ‘What would a perfect day be?’ I’d say a win and a goal, so I am happy I was able to do it.

“I did a lot of work in the summer. Obviously I finished the season injured so I had a lot of work to do and I think it is paying off now.

“I think the understanding I have even with the new gaffer now, it is just working on the pitch. I’m just happy with how everything is going.”

Blackett-Taylor added: “In the second half we had to do a lot more defending because they came out fast.

“But I always know that if I get one moment, that is all it takes. I remember getting the ball on the left and I kind of just squared him up and I could see he was kind of tired.

“I seen space behind him and I kind of just went for it. I think I took two or three touches and then the ball was in the back of the net.

“It all just happened so quick. I can’t even describe the feeling – it was just a mad feeling. I was just really happy that I managed to score and then we got the win.”

Charlton had to defend collectively as a team at times, something they have been working hard on in training under the watchful eye of Appleton since his appointment.

“The gaffer has definitely tried to implement that,” said Blackett-Taylor.

“Even though we have won, he was just talking about moments we could have done better and should have done better.

“We know we have all the talent going forward and can always score, but just keeping he ball out of the back of the net is going to give us more chances of winning games so it is important for us.”
