Chalobah faces uncertain future at Chelsea until next transfer window

TREVOR Chalobah risks being frozen out at Chelsea after failing to secure a deadline day exit from Stamford Bridge.

Bayern Munich attempted to draft in Chalobah on loan in a move which would have seen him link up again with ex-Blues boss Thomas Tuchel, although that didn’t happen in the end.

Nottingham Forest were reportedly prepared to pay up to £25million to sign the defender, a figure half of the £50m Chelsea wanted when they initially made the 24-year-old available for sale.

The Forest move didn’t happen either because Chalobah didn’t fancy a move to the City Ground, meaning he remains at Chelsea for now.

However, the Evening Standard today report he has very little chance of forcing himself into Mauricio Pochettino’s plans once he recovers from a hamstring problem later this month.

That could place Chalobah in a situation similar to Romelu Lukaku, who was training with Chelsea’s U21s until joining Roma on loan.

Munich are believed to still be keen but nothing can happen until the window opens again in January, leaving Chalobah in limbo until then.

The Standard also claim a similar fate awaits Marc Cucurella just over a year since the Spaniard completed a £55m move from Brighton on a six-year deal.

Left-back Cucurella missed out on a switch to Manchester United earlier this month and now, like Chalobah, will have to wait until the new year before he can move away from the Bridge.

Conor Gallagher, a strongly rumoured target for Spurs in the run up to the recent transfer deadline, also faces an uncertain future despite remaining with his boyhood club.

Gallagher has played in all four of Chelsea’s Premier League games this season but uncertainty still surrounds his long-term future and there would be little surprise were he to move on in January.

Ian Maatsen could also be on the way out sooner rather than later.

The Dutch defender snubbed the chance to join former loan club Burnley permanently after a rumoured £32m bid from the Clarets.

Maatsen has made three late Premier League substitute appearances and one start in the Carabao Cup against Wimbledon, but the 21-year-old knows regular starting opportunities will remain hard to come by.
