Chelsea defender expecting big things from Mudryk in years ahead

LEVI Colwill is backing Mykhailo Mudryk to become one of the best players on the planet after the Ukrainian broke his Chelsea duck in last night’s 2-0 win at Fulham.

Colwill provided the 18th minute delivery which Mudryk chested down before coolly slotting past Bernd Leno to put Chelsea ahead.

The advantage was doubled within 60 seconds by Armando Broja to complete what was a comfortable victory in the battle of SW6.

Mudryk came off at half-time with boss Mauricio Pochettino revealing afterwards he had sustained a quad injury which will hopefully not keep him out of Saturday’s trip to Burnley.

And Colwill is convinced there will be no stopping the Ukrainian now he is off the mark following a tricky start to life at the Bridge since completing a £62million January move from Shakhtar Donetsk.

The Blues defender said: “You saw the celebrations after, I was so happy for him.

“The pass was lucky anyway – I found him but I couldn’t do it again!

“I’m over the moon for him and of course he deserves that.

“He is a great player. He can be one of the best in the world and it is just about kicking on from here.

“Hopefully he can build on this and be a great player.

“Obviously it has been tough for him since he has joined but in the first half today he was amazing.

“I think everyone can see the qualities he has. We see it all the time in training that he is such a good player.

“To come here and bring it here for the first half, he was amazing.”

Colwill added: “Like I say, he has just got to build on it. He has got everything, everything you want as a winger and as a player but he just needs to show it every game like he did today.

“It is tough. Obviously coming in from Ukraine and coming to Chelsea, it is a lot of pressure which he might not have experienced before, it is a different culture – (add) everything together and it was always going to be tough for him to come in and hit the ground running.

“Today’s performance was good and his last performance was good, so he is building on from it and soon you will see the player he is.”

Colwill also heaped praise on Broja after he put his injury nightmare behind him to double Chelsea’s lead.

“I’m so happy for him,” the defender said.

“It has been a long time he has been out injured. He has come back and been working so hard.

“To come in today and score is the best way to come back.

“Armando has everything, I would hate to play against him.

“He is big, strong and takes his chances. He is a problem so I wouldn’t want to play against him.”

Chelsea dominated the Fulham game and never really looked troubled by Marco Silva’s side.

It has been a regular feature in the early stages of the campaign for the Blues to not take their chances when in control, but there was no repeat this time.

Colwill said: “We’ve played well in every game in the majority of games so far this season.

“To come here and get what we deserved is a good sign.

“We can’t take it for granted to just come here and beat Fulham, we’ve got to go to Burnley next week with the same confidence, the same aggression and desire to get the win.

“Every game in the Premier League is tough, especially for us right now with all the pressure from the outside.

“We’ve just got to blur it out, go there, play our game and play like Chelsea.”
