Chilwell optimistic Chelsea still heading in right direction

BEN Chilwell is convinced Chelsea are on the right path despite a less than inspiring start to life under Mauricio Pochettino.

The big spending Blues suffered a 1-0 Stamford Bridge defeat to Nottingham Forest on Saturday after Anthony Elanga struck shortly after the break.

Pochettino’s side go international break sat in mid-table with only four points on the board from as many games.

But Chilwell is confident the long-term future under Chelsea’s latest boss remains promising once they discover their ruthless streak in front of goal, even if results so far have been inconsistent.

We are moving in the right direction,” said the England international.

“Every game we have controlled possession and the majority of matches we have played.

“We need to finish chances, be more ruthless and stay composed to get back into games.

“That’s the final bit – finishing our chances.”

Chelsea had 76 percent of the ball against Forest and 21 efforts on goal, although only two were on target.

That lack of cutting edge and inability to turn dominance into goals is what is costing the Pensioners right now, something Chilwell says everyone is determined to put right.

He explained: “It is a very frustrating result and everyone is very disappointed in the changing room right now.

“If you look at the stats we dominated the game, had the possession, but the most important stat is the goals.

“We lost in that department and lost the game.

“That is the black and white of it and we need to improve.

“Mistakes are part of football and it is about how you recover from those mistakes and try and get back into games.”

Chilwell accepted Forest’s goal was a sucker punch his side never recovered from, even though it came just three minutes into the second-half.

He said: “After we conceded, we get too erratic which suited them more and we lost control of the game, which is not what we wanted.

“That is what we need to improve – continuing to play our football after conceding.

It is a very new team still and a lot of new players still trying to find their feet at a new club.

“You have to understand their playing styles, but it is a game we still should be winning, no excuses.

“We will hopefully turn this round as the confidence grows,”
