AFC Wimbledon’s reward for last night’s memorable League Cup victory over Coventry City is a glamour trip to Chelsea.
The League Two Dons stunned their Championship opponents with two late goals to seal a visit to Stamford Bridge later this month.
Coventry, who just missed out on promotion to the Premier League, took the lead on 20 minutes.
Joe Lewis was adjudged to have fouled Haji Wright and Matty Godden made no mistake from the resultant penalty.
The Sky Blues looked to be heading into the next round until the 86th minute when Wimbledon drew level, substitute Omar Bugiel firing home from just outside of the box.
That potentially set up a penalty shootout to settle the tie but Ryan McLean had other ideas, volleying home from a tight angle after being found completely unmarked at the back post in the 92
Dons keeper Nik Tzanev produced a dramatic late save to deny Coventry an equaliser and cap what was a memorable night at Plough Lane.
Manager Johnnie Jackson said: “It’s early days obviously, but any successful team has that base of solidity and defensive structure and I think we looked like that.
“Coventry had their moments, they’ve got quality players, but if we want to do anything, you got to have that base.
“We’re trying to build a squad where you’ve got competition for places and you’ve got people that are tough to leave out.
“But when you’re looking behind you to make changes, you know they’re going to come on and have a positive influence on the game.”
