Dons boss wants strikers to thrive on crosses

Johnnie Jackson is challenging his strikers to make the most of deliveries into the danger zone ahead of the League Two season.

Josh Davison finished third top scorer in his debut campaign at the Cherry Red Records stadium with nine goals after signing from Charlton, a tally he is keen to add to in 2023/24.

Speaking to the club’s YouTube channel after Saturday’s 0-0 friendly stalemate at Woking, the Dons boss was asked about Davison playing in a more central position this year.

Jackson replied: “It is something we speak about a lot with Josh and all our forwards, especially when we’ve got the quality that we have got out wide now with the types of deliveries that we get in the box.

“With (James) Tilley on his left food today, and Josh Neufville both ways, we know we are going to get a lot of crosses into the box.

“So it is about the forwards’ movement when we get up in those situations and about making sure they are filling the goal and when balls are coming in that the strikers are in the right position to try and capitalise.

“Again we’ve got to do a lot more work on that but it is something Josh is really keen on. He wants to obviously score as many goals as he can this year and improve on his tally from last year.”

Meanwhile, defender Will Nightingale looks likely to join SPL outfit Ross County on loan according to reports north of the border.

The Daily Record say the experienced 27-year-old will join the Highlanders until January, claiming Ross County won the race to draft in the centre half ahead of several English clubs.

Nightingale came through the ranks at the Dons, making 175 appearances and scoring seven times since breaking into the first team eight years ago.

AFC Wimbledon continue their pre-season on Saturday at home to QPR (3pm).
