Dons defender puts hands up after Sutton loss

DEFENDER Jack Currie admitted AFC Wimbledon weren’t at the races as they went down to a shock 1-0 Boxing Day home defeat to rivals Sutton United.

The only goal of the game arrived just after the hour when Omar Sowunmi headed home to lift Sutton off the foot of the League Two table.

For the Dons, the result means they drop out of the play-offs and Currie put his hands up afterwards to accept the performance wasn’t up to scratch.

He told afcwimbledon.co.uk: “In all fairness there were moments where we did what we were supposed to, but I think on the whole we just didn’t turn up.

“We didn’t give the fans what they wanted on Boxing Day and that was down to us. We’d prepared and it was all very structured – we knew what we had to do, and we didn’t do it.

“It was below the standards we’ve set.

“Recently we’ve been keeping the ball, moving it well, but today we completely went away from that and that’s on us as players.”

Reeves added: “We get clear instructions from the gaffer and the managerial team and if we don’t stick by them, we get undone.

“We were losing duels, we were losing battles, we weren’t picking up seconds and that was on us.

“We weren’t ready quick enough for the throw in that led to the goal and he shouldn’t have had an easy finish.”

Wimbledon have a quick opportunity to put yesterday’s result behind them when they return to Plough Lane on Friday evening against Colchester United.

And Currie is confident lessons will be quickly learned ahead of the U’s arrival.

He explained: “We’ve proved when we’ve had a loss this season that we comeback from it strong and I think that’s the key message for Friday.

“Most importantly we need to show up on Friday against Colchester and we know how to do that.

“We reset, train over the next couple of days and make sure that we’re on it, having assessed where it went wrong.”

Manager Johnnie Jackson also vowed to bounce back on Friday and use the shock of losing to Sutton as motivation to right the wrong.

He said: “This group won’t wallow in defeat, it’s not what they’re about.

“We’ll be in tomorrow to work and prepare for Colchester.

“The beauty of football is that we have a chance to put things right in just three days’ time.

“This one stings. My players are hurting and I certainly am.”
