Eagles defender looking to build on late Spurs fightback at Burnley

MARC Guehi wants Crystal Palace to pick up where they left off last night when they visit Burnley next week.

The Eagles finished the game strongly and gave table-toppers Spurs a scare when Jordan Ayew struck in stoppage time after Joel Ward’s own goal and Son Heung-min’s effort had seemingly wrapped up victory for the visitors.

Tottenham survived the scare to maintain their unbeaten start but for England defender Guehi the way Palace ended the contest gives them something to build on going into Saturday’s trip to Turf Moor.

He told Sky Sports: “It is something we have to take. In these games you have to take as many positives as you can to help yourself progress and move forward.

“The team tried to carry out what the manager and the staff put in place for us, so disappointing, but we have to move on from this game.

“We carried out the manager’s instructions throughout the game.”

The result means back-to-back Premier League defeats for the first time under Roy Hodgson since he returned for a second spell in SE25.

But Guehi pointed out there had been a notable improvement since the 4-0 defeat at Newcastle last weekend where Palace were second best throughout.

“It was a bit more of a reaction from the last game for sure,” the defender said.

“The goal was important for our strikers, because we know we’ve got loads of good players and it gives them confidence moving forwards for other games, and important because we were on the front foot and can cause teams problems.

“Like I said, we need to take those last few minutes and take it into the next game.”

Hodgson had challenged his players to react to the Newcastle display and the manager felt afterwards he had got it.

“I think today’s performance was very different to the one last week,” the Selhurst chief said.

“There were a lot of very encouraging things to see in this performance.

“My overriding feeling at the moment is that it was unfortunate that we couldn’t build on the first-half, because of the unfortunate own-goal which put us 1-0 down.“

Hodgson was also pleased with how his team had competed with the league leaders.

He explained: “I thought our first-half performance was very good.

“I thought we gave them a good game throughout. We were playing against a good team.

“Unfortunately, at 2-0 down it becomes very, very difficult.

“We took some chances. We put some players on the field who haven’t played much for us and had a look at them.

“And to be fair, even right to the end the team was fighting.

“We scored a late goal, had lots of corner kicks and were pressing so I’m not disappointed in the team’s performance at all, not really.

“But I am disappointed of course in the result.”
