MATTY Stevens is closing in on the goal target Johnnie Jackson set for him when he joined from Forest Green last summer.

Stevens scored a double in AFC Wimbledon’s 3-0 win against promotion rivals Crewe Alexandra at Plough Lane on Tuesday.

Stevens has scored nineteen goals in 37 games in all competitions this season, fifteen of them in League Two.

Stevens’ goals have helped fire the Dons’ automatic promotion challenge in League Two, as they sit fourth, just a point off both Bradford City and Notts County.

Wimbledon have another huge home game on Saturday, when they host Salford City, who are four points further back in seventh.

“When I came in to join the club and spoke to the gaffer, he said he needed a 20-goals a season man and I told him I could do that,” Stevens said on the Dons’ website.

“Long may it continue, but we’ve got to kick on again for Saturday versus Salford. hopefully I score another couple.

“I think I’m joint-top goalscorer in the league at the moment. It’d be nice to stay in and around that, but for any player that claims to be a good striker at this level, it’d be nice to hit the 20-goal mark.

“Once I’m there, not many achieve that, it then becomes a bonus to keep chipping away after that. Now, my goals seem to be very important.

“We’re spreading them around a little, so it’s important for me to stay focused and take my chances because the goals are helping us to get the three points at present.”
