MATTY Stevens said it was an “unbelievable feeling” to be named the London Football Awards’ English Football League Player of the Year.
AFC Wimbledon striker Stevens got the award ahead of Millwall’s Japhet Tanganga, Watford’s Giorgi Chakvetadze, Leyton Orient’s Jamie Donley and Bromley’s Michael Cheek.
Stevens, 27, has scored 20 goals in all competitions for Johnnie Jackson’s side this season, sixteen of them in League Two as the Dons fight for automatic promotion.
Stevens and Cheek will come face-to-face on Saturday when Wimbledon host the Ravens at a sold-out Plough Lane.
Stevens was presented with his award at the home of English football.
“It’s an unbelievable feeling to win this award here at Wembley,” Stevens said. “It’s a very proud moment for me and my family.
“It makes me want to keep achieving things. There’s still business to finish off at Wimbledon, it’ll be even better to get promoted and hopefully win some more awards come the end of the season.
“Thank you to all of the staff and my team-mates.”
The independent judging panel comprised representatives from football administration, football media and former players.
