NATHAN Jones said Charlton Athletic did what they could to keep Thierry Small before the defender agreed to join Championship rivals Preston North End.

Small, 20, has joined the Lilywhites on a free transfer on a four-year deal.

Small played 62 times for the club including in the League One play-off final win over Leyton Orient at Wembley.

The Addicks had offered Small a new contract.

Jones said: “We wish Thierry all the best. We tried to keep him at the club and offered him a contract, which he turned down. He felt Preston was a better fit for him, so we thank him for his contribution and wish him well.”

Charlton added: “Everyone at the club would like to thank Thierry for his contribution both on and off the pitch during his time at the club.”
