Charlton Athletic hopeful of holding off stiff competition from League One rivals to land Millwall centre-back

CHARLTON Athletic are hoping to fend off competition to land Millwall centre-back Alex Mitchell.

Mitchell, 22, is in demand after an impressive season on loan at Lincoln City. He made 37 appearances in League One, scoring once, as the Imps missed out on the play-offs by just two points.

Lincoln were interested in a deal for Mitchell, along with Wycombe Wanderers.

Mitchell, who has a year left on his current contract, was also understood to be on the radar of Oxford United before they were promoted to the Championship through the play-offs.

Mitchell was booked in for a medical at the club on Friday.

Charlton boss Nathan Jones is hoping to have the bulk of his squad in place before the return to pre-season training.

“We’d like to get the squad completed by our return date of June 27. We’ve worked tirelessly for the last three to four weeks in terms of arranging meetings with players. We’re trying to be bold in our recruitment,” Jones said.

“I’m sure that by the time that we do get to the first day of pre-season, we’ll have the majority, if not all, of our squad in place. That’s so important because pre-season is a real big time, an important time to gel the squad and lay down certain things.

“We believe we’ve agreed with a few, so they should be announced in due course. But we try to keep everything in-house and quiet because all of the signings and all of the people we’re speaking to will have vast competition from higher leagues and a lot of the teams in our division.”
