CHARLTON Athletic extended their winning run at The Valley to eight games with a resounding 4-0 victory over Huddersfield Town in League One action on Saturday.
An early header from Matty Godden, two goals from Tyreece Campbell and an own goal from Huddersfield keeper Lee Nicholls ensured a perfect rebound from the 3-0 loss to Peterborough the previous weekend.
The win boosted the Addicks’ play-off hopes while ending a five-game losing streak against the Terriers, who remain a point outside the top six.
Charlton started fast and the majority of the crowd of 17,278 erupted with excitement when Godden headed home after just 30 seconds.
Campbell and Thierry Small had two attempts in quick succession nine minutes in, but both were blocked.
Eight minutes, Campbell added the second with a low shot into the bottom-right corner.
Ben Wiles had the first real attempt for the visitors after half an hour but shot high over the crossbar.
Just after the half-hour mark, Godden had two attempts within five minutes that both went wide right before LukeBerry headed off-target.
The Addicks came out firing at the start of the second half, as attempts from Campbell, Godden and Berry all forced Nicholls into making diving saves.
Nicholls could do nothing to prevent the third in the 53rd minute as Campbell tucked the ball into the bottom-right corner of the net.
Charlton’s fourth, seven minutes later, was initially credited to Greg Docherty before being ruled an own goal by Nicholls after the ball hit him on the way in.
Huddersfield substitute JoshRuffels forced Will Mannion into his first real action in the 68th minute with a header that the goalkeeper was able to save.
Charlton substitute Chuks Aneke nearly added a fifth three minutes after coming on, firing a shot wide right in the 75th minute.
Mannion then denied Callum Marshall a consolation with ten minutes to go.
Aneke thought he had got the fifth goal in the 82nd minute, only for it to be flagged offside.
The four goals was the Addicks’ biggest tally since the 5-0 win at Northampton Town in December.
The victory takes Charlton to 69 points after 39 games, with an eight-point cushion back to Huddersfield in the race for the play-offs.
Charlton return to action on Tuesday as they travel to fourteenth-place Mansfield Town for a 7.45pm kick-off.
