Defender’s return gives Charlton Athletic boss dilemma after centre-back trio help extend unbeaten run

LLOYD Jones returns to the Charlton match-day squad for tonight’s League One game at Cheltenham Town after serving a two-match suspension.

Defender Jones picked up his tenth yellow card of the season in the 0-0 draw at home to Portsmouth, and missed the win at Derby County and draw at Northampton Town at the weekend.

It gives manager Nathan Jones a tough selection decision as Macaulay Gillesphey has come into a back three that have given little away in the last two games, with the Cobblers’ goal at the weekend coming from a mistake by goalkeeper Harry Isted.

Jones will be without Kayne Ramsay and Miles Leaburn. Tennai Watson should be available.

Chuks Aneke was absent from the squad for the 1-1 draw at Sixfields. After the game, Jones said: “He felt his calf was stiff after Tuesday night [against Derby].

“There was no point risking him because we want him ready for Tuesday.”

The Addicks are unbeaten in five games and should have been more than one goal up at Northampton before Isted’s error.

Charlton are four points above the relegation zone.

“It would have been wonderful if we’d had two more points,” Jones said on Charlton’s website ahead of the game at the Completely-Suzuki Stadium. “It would have pushed us up the league and given us a bit more of a buffer, and we’d have had what we deserved.

“We’ve got to [thrive in the pressure] but it’s not just what I thrive in, it’s what the whole club and the players have to thrive in as well.

“We’re looking forward to every game now because we’re at a level of performance where we’re doing very, very well.

“We’ve got to keep that momentum going, keep picking up points and then get ourselves away from the danger zone.”
