Former Charlton Athletic striker on whether he would celebrate Valley goal as he promises: ‘The truth will come out’

ALFIE May said he won’t celebrate if he scores for Birmingham City against his former club Charlton Athletic at The Valley on Saturday.

Striker May, 31, left the Addicks for Blues in the summer and has scored five goals in nine games in League One for the table-toppers.

His latest was the only goal last weekend against Huddersfield Town, whom Birmingham beat to his signature.

May has already made a return to The Valley, coming on in the 57th minute in Blues’ 1-0 win in the first round of the EFL Cup in August.

May left Charlton after only one season, angering many Addicks supporters. He scored 27 goals in 50 appearances in all competitions for the club.

May said in a video released on Charlton’s website after his exit that the main reason for leaving London was to be closer to his family.

“They’re a massive club, an ex-Premier League club,” May told local media ahead of the clash. “They have a manager in there that’s a very good coach. At the minute their results are not showing in the league.

“It’s a hard one talking about Charlton to be honest. I was only there for a year and some of the abuse when I left…they don’t know half of the story.

“I think I said it last time, eventually the story will come out. The club itself is fantastic, I really enjoyed my time there. The players and the fans supported me so much. It’s a local club to me. There’s a bit of frustration, hopefully I can score Saturday. Will I celebrate? I won’t be celebrating.”

May has come off the bench in two of the last three games among fierce competition in Chris Davies’ expensively-assembled squad.

May said: “You could ask the 25 lads in the changing room if they want to start and everyone is going to say yes. The competition is high and you have to fight for your shirt. I think that’s really important.

“The togetherness we have in the group is fantastic. Everybody wants to do well. We want to go back up as a club and the fans are on that journey with us.”
