Next Charlton Athletic boss watches Valley defeat – as Curtis Fleming asked if he will stay on

NATHAN Jones was at The Valley on Saturday afternoon and saw the job he has in front of him as Charlton Athletic’s winless League One run stretched to twelve games with their 1-0 defeat to Derby County.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing scored the only goal of the game in the 31st minute as Paul Warne’s Rams moved up to second, four points behind leaders Portsmouth with a game in hand.

The Addicks are nineteenth, three points above the relegation zone after one win in their last fifteen league games and no clean sheets in their last eighteen.

Interim head coach Curtis Fleming was in charge of his second game after the 1-1 draw at Blackpool last weekend. He was asked if he knows whether he will be part of Jones’ backroom staff after he joined before Michael Appleton was sacked.

“That’s going to be a chat and a talk. I came in as a cub appointment but we’ll speak,” Fleming told BBC Sport London. “The important thing isn’t me, whatever happens is fine.

“It’s about getting results and the new coach coming in. He’ll have seen some stuff that he really liked today, but there will be other stuff that he’ll want to tidy up.

“When he looks at what he’s got here I think he’ll look and think, ‘I’ve got a lot of people I can work [with]’. There’s things he’s going to have to change, there’s no doubt about it, because if you’re not keeping clean sheets and won that many games, something’s got to change.”

Jones’ first game is set to be at Reading next Saturday. The Royals are 21st, three points behind Charlton.

Fleming said. “Next week’s game is a huge game, there’s no getting away from that. I think we should have got something from the game today but we didn’t and we have to move on.”
